MathInvestigations
We just started Geometry. Each unit begins with a end of unit test. If students have more than 85% mastery of the unit, they can skip that particular unit or do higher level work within that unit. It will be individualized. The goal is to allow student to work on what they need. We also practice multiplication and division for fluency by using Reflex Math. I-Ready math strengthens content based skills for the level into which students individually placed. ScienceScience Fair Projects are expected for all fifth graders. They will be due before Winter Break in December. More details to follow.
More at: https://sciencefair.dpsk12.org/resources/ The rest of our science curriculum follows the directive from DPS. We are sent "science boxes" and the units are "Natural Disasters", "Weather" and "Matter". We will also conduct experiments and become more familiar with the Scientific Method over the year. |
Guided ReadingIn conjunction with our study of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we will delve into two autobiographies of two people who can speak to the human rights in other parts of the world. We will learn more about Afghanistan by reading "I am Malala" and South Africa by reading "Born a Crime."
LiteracyOur study of human rights has grounded our literacy instruction so far this year. It has allowed us to explore dystopian literature and even write our own dystopian stories. What would a society be like if certain rights were denied? Students are developing answers to this question through writing their own stories. Students will also be writing non-fiction pieces with research on a country of their choosing and a report vis-a-vis that country's human rights record.
